If you're getting stuff, then you most likely are doing something stupid.

The best policy to avoid things is to use common sense. Next time you get something, figure out the source and avoid it.

No. You're just loving lucky. You can catch something simply by turning your computer on having it connect to the internet, you don't even need to be doing anything, although sending online requests and stuff does help highlight your IP.

A firewall keeps out most of the simpler (and more nefarious) upload attacks you'd get while passively downloading/browsing anything. It still won't block things like clicking ads and whatnot that thereby give them permission to upload stuff to your computer. People with an extensive amount of viruses are usually the click-happy ones or the ones that do really stupid stuff like downloading research movies and research movie add-ons "needed to watch the research movie" (i.e. trojan malware). Other dumb things include looking for warez or script kiddie tools.

All I use is a firewall and a simple symantec antivirus, whatever those two things don't clean up will likely not be cleaned up by 5 other extra programs you might want to add in there. You can add as many filters as you want but more often then not they'll all have the same virus definitions with some minor differences here and there.

They can get through firewall if they really wanted to. I don't try to use it as it's pointless in that it hinders a lot of online playability. If someone wants my vacation photos that much, they can have them. I never keep anything important on my pc for too long. I back things up every month or two and archive it on DVDR. Saves me a lot of time should I ever need to reformat.
