I don't do 3d art, just figured that with the computer, you're just using a mouse or a tablet. I don't know how it would work with real clay, but, I've used Super Sculpey and, that seemed a little bit easier.
And working with clay is harder than it looks. I think 3d modeling on a computer is a lot easier, at least to make something look decent.

Edit: Also there is no undo button in real life, I would have given up a long time ago if I couldn't undo in a 3d modeling program :P
I don't know exactly how actual clay physics work, but, in this case, since you're doing it flat, it should be easier shouldn't it? And, good call on the undo button, I would have given up years ago aswell.
