While the first game shared the title of "Descent," it had nothing to do with Descent. FreeSpace was a flight sim, while Descent was a first-person shooter.

FreeSpace 2 is the only one I've played. For a game that came out in 1999, the effects are quite epic, with capital ships wailing on each other with beam cannons.

Some levels have you flying through nebulae (annoying, very), making it hard to see and pretty much punching your FPS in the face. Well, my FPS at least.

I'm pretty sure this is abandonware.

Here's a small .gif from Wikipedia. Not very easy to see, but it gets the point across.

The first game did not have as good capital ship vs. capital ship action, but the dogs fights were just as good.

Freespace 2 was the shiz, playing around with the scenario editor I made massive fleet battles that taxed my CPU and GPU to the limit and that my little fighter or bomber had little to no influence on.

Haha, that's awesome.

There's another ship in the game that could eat that orion class shown there for breakfast, then there is yet another ship that could eat that ship for lunch. (In the game it makes you feel like a little ant pissing on a redwood when you make bombing runs at it)

If there was a ship that could swallow the Colossus, that would be the most osht ship ever.

*spoiler*

Like this ship did?:

"The only apparent weakness of the Shivan juggernaut is that the massive beam cannons are concentrated at the bow."

Not a weakness, a reason to stay out of the loving way.

Holy stuff.

I got so pissed off at the TAG-test mission, so I used a cheat that destroys your current target.

IT WAS SO ANNOYING.

Hmmm, seems someone has made a port for Wii, I wonder how it plays.

I always wanted to get this but the download was huge :(

So, is it freeware or where do I buy it...?

http://www.freefunfiles.com/software/videogames/sim/freespace-2.html

I need to re-install (i have the disks) it but once i have I'd be more than willing to rape you repeatedly in an online game.

Let's go, then, I'm installing right now.
Also MSN

looks pretty good and tips before i start?

Tips? Most people have their own style of play and favorite ships, I like the one with 8 guns, loaded with dumb fire missiles, then i fly directly at things firing everything.

Or bomber loaded with an insane number of anti fighter missiles (they are meant for carrying anti capitol ship weapons but when they carry regular missiles they can carry and ass-load.).

Of course those are my choices for online play, not the campaign.

They are both kinda cheap tactics, many people do not approve of you sitting in space spewing missiles at them while they actually have to maneuver.
