Yes it fails.  I actually just yesterday picked up my Pokemon Red.  (Couldn't find Yellow  D:)  Sat down, played for 3 hours with my loving bulbasaur and pidgey.  Added a Geodude and am training a magikarp because I want the loving Gyarados.  (Yes I let them evolve.  No Caterpies in this version and Weedles are for friends)  Point is, they have the same replay value as every other pokemon game I own.  The old ones are just way less handicapped.  I like gold/silver and ruby/saphire as well.  After that, it's just regurgitated stuff.
