Steam is a downloadable, program that allows you to chat,view other player,join groups,buy and play games,and much more.
Do I need to buy it?
No,the only thing you need to pay for, is the games you buy.
When I buy a game, what do I do with it?
You can use the option of "gift" to send it to a friend or just keep it to yourself.
How long does it take for the game to come?
The only wait you will have is the speed of your download,that's right,once you buy it you can download it directly from the Steam Client.
Wait, I am playing a game but I want to see if my friend invite is accepted.
Luckily there is an ingame Steam client for you to use with all the same features of being on your desktop.
You said you can gift games,will I get a copy of the game too?
No, unless you get a set of 4 or something,you will not recieve a game.
What games am I able to buy?

I have gotten Steam and bought Counter Strike:Source,I got a guest pass,what is it?
A guest pass is a gift you can send to somebody to give them 3 days of that game.
How do I send a guest pass?
You can send it via E-mail or Steam ID.
