Author Topic: The decline of survival horror games  (Read 4500 times)

Ok, I just played dead space the other day because everyone said it was "the scariest game ever" 5 minutes in I was laughing the game was so stupid. It's a good game, I'll give it that, but it simply isn't scary, it's gore. Which made me think, what happened to those old survival horror games that would legitimatly freak you out? the ones that would mess with your head, they wouldn't just scare you physically, they would mess with you in ways that made you want to keep playing out of terror. I don't know, maybe I'm jaded, but what happened to legitimatly scary survival horror games?

The bad graphics of old scary games make me more scared.

Like Silent Hill 1.

old resident evils are loving great.

but 4 and 5 are ass games. just plain old linear shooters now. tons of ammo and shooting zombies. yawn.
completely ruined the series.

the slow, creepy sounds, haven't seen a thing in an hour when the forget am i going to be jumped on scary has a different charm. while puzzle solving, rather then gun collecting.

I completly agree, not the resident evil 4 and 5 aren't good shooters, they do what they do well, but they simply lost the fear element that the earlier games had

Fear 2 had me scared for a while. I never did finish it though :(

The first alone in the dark is good. But the new one, the zombies are soo easy, just find a fire hydrant and wham wham wham.

Try afraid of monsters director's cut. Its a mod for HL1 (NOT SOURCE)

From segments I have played, really loving dark, way too excessively dark, that is all that is keeping this a horror mod.

I assume you mean dark as in you can't see anything 5 feet in front of you?

That would not work as my laptop is already excessivly dark as it is, and It won't go any higher on brightness

Luigi's Mansion and LoZ scared me when I was 6 :(
LoZ was scary cause at night things come out the ground and scare the piss out of me.

ontopic: no survival horror game ever scared me :o

Games can never be scary unless you are a child and not controlling the character in the game.

If you have control over what your character does in a game, your brain knows it's fake, and you can not get scared. Often times, people mistake being startled as being scared.

that's the thing, modern games are not scary, why be scared if you've got a gun? a lot of the older games you didn't have guns, or even weapons, you had to think on the fly, and they could be scary as hell not knowing what your going to have to get out of.

My art is becoming avatars. I love it.

Try playing in your house, home alone, lights off, midnight, fullmoon, flashlight next to you, during a thunder storm, volumes up, and wall hanging mirror behind the TV.
