The reason why a laptop may be slower is because
the laptop's specs probably weren't as good as your recently acquired desktop.
Laptops can be "faster" than desktops.
It's all in the processor and GPU.
Also, the thing you said about "embedded". Who the forget did you learn computing from?
I could make a computer in a pizza-box sized case. As long as it's cooled properly, it can be just as fast as a computer (of the same specs) in a bigger box.
