They put the orange tip for shipping and distributing purposes in the U.S., I believe.  Other then that, it could be kept on for safety or sprayed over for a more realistic look.
Orange tip is I beleive only used in US and its in order to distinguish real from fake guns. however most other countries don't care.

I played airsoft for the first time last weekend.
It was interesting to say the least. I didn't feel any pain at all whereas my friend Matthew howled in pain whenever he got shot.

Lol, I haven't, nor do I plan on getting shot with an airsoft gun.

I've only been hit in the head once or twice and maybe once in the crotch. :S

It really does not hurt at all. It's like getting a light pinch for half a second.
I shot my own bare foot and didn't flinch. It was a low-power handgun, but still.
Paintball hurts more than airsoft, and paintball doesn't hurt that much (unless your opponent has like a 350fps gun :u)

Only airsoft guns I have shoot at 400-500 fps.
I don't want to be infront of those. :S

Still doesn't hurt.
Airsoft - small plastic pellet
Paintball - marble-sized ball of plastic
I mean yeah, I'm not saying it doesn't hurt at all, but it really doesn't much.

What about steel bb's?

Never been shot by one. The only BB guns I've seen/fired with steel BBs would puncture your skull.

400-500 FPS would sting and at the least leave welts at close range

The orange tip is there for shipping and sales reasons, once you get it though, you can do whatever you want to it in most states. Always check you local laws though before you take someones advice from here.

In California taking off the orange can get you arrested by police if not shot.
