I uploaded a new avatar it all uploads correctly and I can see it. But after a while of browsing the forums it goes black.

No it isn't the looping. It just ends up black.

Most gifs are set to loop infintely aren't they? I know mine is.

gifs have embedded scripts.
In which you can set to loop or loop for a certain amount of time.
