The topic was used to gain attention, attention to tell people about a film he is making. The intention was not for sympathy, however on the server that is what it appeared as.
The way he carried it out though makes it appear like his intention was to gain sympathy, at least that is how I see it.

I pointed out that it has been done before many of times. And there is nothing new. It has been done on blockland tons of times as well.
