Author Topic: Your / You're  (Read 2331 times)

Alright guys, this needs to be done for people who haven't been taught this in school yet.

The Difference Between "Your" and "You're"

Your

Proper usage: "I saw your picture in the thread!"
Note: Remember this - "Your" is usually used for possession. "Your ball", "your friend", "your mother".

Improper usage: "Your a good artist!"
Note: This usage may prompt the response "What about his good artist", because this sentence is implying that you own a good artist. (Which may be the truth, but isn't likely.)

You're

Proper usage: "You're a good artist!"
Note: Remember this - It's a contraction of "you" and "are".

Improper usage: "I saw you're picture in the thread!"
Note: This would read "I saw you are picture in the thread!"

I'm sorry, but I think this topic wasn't really needed that much.

Ironic that you should make a grammar/spelling thread and say "alright". The proper word is "all right", which seems a trivial as people misusing you're/your.

i just like to type fast some times i use you're but most of the time i use your, ill try to get back to typing You're

–adverb
all right.
Usage note:
The form alright as a one-word spelling of the phrase all right in all of its senses probably arose by brown townogy with such words as already and altogether. Although alright is a common spelling in written dialogue and in other types of informal writing, all right is used in more formal, edited writing.

You're = you are
Your = Belongs to you

It is rather pointless, however all drama is.

Ah, I see mistakes with that a lot. I work really hard to keep myself from doing that, even though people usually know what I mean anyways. It just bugs me. >_<

The same thing goes for to/too and it's/its. I like knowing that what I'm posting is grammatically correct. :)

I'm such a nerd...

Not really needed but a good point i constantly mix this up on accident.

You should also bring up these: to, too, two; there, their, they're; and others I've not thought of yet.

I know it's not really the biggest issue, but I thought it needed to be said. I see it often, and it's usually because people don't know the difference. Like I said, some people haven't been taught this. It's also a minor pet-peeve of mine.

How so? I admitted I was wrong, and that was the end of it.

admitting it doesn't erase the mistake.
