if some guy says "ice cream sucks" do you automatically assume he means everyone hates ice cream as much as him?

Death has as much of a lasting effect in this comic as being slapped in the face. Several of the characters have died more than twice and are still kicking around. even the "permadead" ones are still able to interact with each other in dreambubbles.
Also, if the trolls are just a gimmick, they're a pretty loving huge gimmick. It's like someone stapled another Homestuck on to Homestuck.

usually they are, and trolls would've remained fine as gimmick status, but when a gimmick becomes an actual part of the story the story starts going downhill

Well maybe it seemed like a gimmick at first, but it could have been intended to be part of the story from the first conversation. It's not like Hussie was like "oh this troll thing is gold I should do more of it".
