I wrote this short plot element a day ago, it seems to fit in here.
Prologue
Mobilization
The deserted halls of Base 17 suddenly came alive with the sound of polished boot heels crashing against the tile floor. Gunnery Sergeant Wong had an important message for the general commanding the recent investigation of two robots left over from the Great Island War.
Wong rounded the corner and ran into the general’s office. A large chubby Asian man, in his late 50’s, sat behind the desk, puffing on a cigarette going over some documents. As Wong rushed in General Yakitsoba looked up, slightly amused by Wong’s rushed demeanor.
“What can I help you with, Sgt. Wong?” he asked, taking a long puff on his cigarette.
Wong violently shook his jacket looking for something. After a few moments, he withdrew a small envelope, marked with the insignia of the UNOE’s General Assembly.
“Sir, this just arrived from the United Capitol! It’s data we received on the Island case.”
Yakitsoba grabbed the paper and began to read. As he saw the words typed freshly on the paper, his eyes widened and his cigarette fell into his ashtray. Finally; after all these years, he was finally about to find the missing robots that had caused his army such destruction nearly 10 years ago. How he remembered that slaughter. It haunted him at night, in the back of his mind.
Nearly 10 years ago, an assault was planned on a floating island in the sky, part of a conquest for a powerful item called the Demon Crown. Assigned to, at the time, Lt. Col. Yakitsoba’s unit was a legion of over 1000 robot soldiers, designed for merciless slaughter. Each day, he would go amongst the ranks of his troops, inspecting them, with their cobalt blue exoskeletons gleaming in the light. However, his unit also had 5 experimental robots, designed to be more human and experience human emotion. Two stuck out in his mind. These two were Model #576 and #577, codenamed, Quote and Curly. A pair that was designed to be inseparable in combat, and even more so at peacetime.
As the legion landed via airboat on the shores of Mimiga Island, they met a maelstrom of bullets and artillery fire. 998 robots of his legion went on a killing spree as they slaughtered innocent Mimiga women, men, and children. However, Quote and Curly refused to take part in such acts. As a result, they were detained for court-martialing. But that night, pushed to the brink of insanity, the pair blasted their way out of the cold and dark Military base, and disappeared into the maze of areas the island contained. He lost three-quarters of his legion thanks to those robots. The horror of that battle, more so than any he ever fought against the Mimigas, haunted him for the rest of his life.
“General? Are you alright?”
Yakitsoba broke from his flashback, and wiped his face with his hand. He stood up, and turned towards the window.
“Sergeant, do you know why we’re up here on this god-forsaken hell hole of a rock?”
“No…no, sir.”
“I thought as much. Even after the war ended, it was never enough for those bastards in the General Assembly. They want that Crown, and they’re willing to slaughter innocent Mimigas for it. But, do you know why I allow such pointless murder?”
“Not really, sir.”
“Because I get paid to do it.”
Wong unloosened a button on his collar as he watched the general slowly sit back down in his seat, and bury his face in his hands.
“Sergeant, prepare the troops. We’ve got renegade robots to deactivate.”
Wong saluted his officer and raced down the hall to the Battle Plan office. Yakitsoba stood up and put a hand on his family photo.
“I’m sorry, Chie. I’m truly sorry.”
He walked over to the coat hanger and slipped on his jacket. He took one last look at the office he had worked for so long in, and shook his head. No time for memories, he thought. After all, I’ve got an army to command.
With that, he hit the light switch and shut the giant steel door.
I win again?
