Author Topic: Source games - OS paged pool memory low.  (Read 2053 times)

I get this error while playing most games from VALVe. It shows as a bit of red text in the upper-right hand corner of the screen that says "OS paged pool memory low", and when I shoot or look at too much stuff, the whole game crashes. Anyone know why?

Your computer needs upgrades, most likely.

You're probably running on a very bad PC.  I got that during a free weekend trying out tf2 back when I had an x300.  You need to upgrade.

This didn't happen when I first bought my PC.

Then close some programs.

You can try increasing the size of your paging file.

How would I do that?

Most Source games have that option.

It's around the options. In L4D and L4D2 it's on Options>Video>Advanced.

I thought I said not to use that Windows 1995.

This happens when you don't have enough ram and you need to use too much of your page file (which I believe is a small portion of your hard drive that can be used by your RAM to store stuff that it doesn't currently need but that it may need to recall later). The same thing happened to me on my old computer when I played TF2, because it only had 1GB of ram. I guess you could increase your page file, but you'll need to look up how to do that because I don't know how. An even better solution is to just buy more ram. Or you could probably just do nothing, because nothing bad actually happened to me other than having the red message up in the corner lol.

It has nothing to do with your graphics card, marcem.

My laptop can run HL2DM perfectly, as long as I don't go on big maps like dm_lockup.

That doesn't increase your actual page file, it just allows the game to claim more of your page file. But yeah, I guess that should fix it.
Also antivirus programs tend to rape your page file so perhaps you might want to disable them while playing if your page file is too miniscule.
