Author Topic: I am growing my finger nails out...  (Read 1579 times)

...on my right hand. I will use these for classical guitar finger picking. First of all, I have a severe habit of peeling my nails with other nails. I've been growing them for a few weeks and have peeled the left hand nails more to satisfy my habit. The new nail (white part) on my right hand is about 1/4" long and going.

So...  any tips on not breaking them? How about breaking this peeling habit? I'm totally serious.

It's not uncommon.

This is what I'm going for:

Well i always have my nails that long, Helps with doing stuff :P

I have this habit aswell. The only way I stop is by chewing on my headset cords(I know ._.) or something plastic. For some reason I always keep my pinky and ring finger nails longer then the others.

I always use a pick, but protip: don't use your thumb unless you like blisters.

I do this too. I just try to ignore my nails when I feel like 'peeling' them.

The nails on my right hand used to be roughly an inch or a little longer for the guitar. I eventually clipped them off so I could pick up the bass again.

I kept myself from peeling them by just developing another habit that was just as satisfying, like peeling the fingernails on my left hand instead (Which was also a plus cause it made fretting easier) and peeling my toenails (I obviously used hand sanitizer afterwards :P). I also fiddle my hair a lot and, what I've found to be one of the best replacements, I carry around a paper clip everywhere and bend it into different shapes.
As for keeping them in tact, all you can really do is work on making yourself constantly aware of them.

chew gum.

also,
The new nail (white part)
You nail grows from the bottom of it and pushes it up, in the direction of the end of your finger. the white part you are talking about is the dead part.
cheers.

That's like... Aww Gross.

You need one of these if you don't want to kill yourself by picking your nose.

Does playing with your nails... hurt?

No... Peeling your nails is painless.

the guitarist from a finnish prog band called focus has his thumb nail about half the length of his thumb
