Author Topic: Helicopter Guidelines + Vehicle's getting stuck  (Read 1686 times)

If a Helicopter is to be created effectively, especially if done for V14, here is a list of issues with our current helicopters:

1. Lift: Spacebar should propel the Helicopter upward, but not like Ghost's shoddy script where it "jumps" upward. It should increase in acceleration.

2. Fall: Shift should propel the Helicopter downward.

3. The "Bouncy Ball" Effect: Currently, when helicopters hit certain things, they go absolutely spastic and fly around at an extremely high velocity spinning and whatnot. One theory on preventing this is to have the helicopter crash and explode. This causes Blockland to crash without warning sometimes.

4. The Death Animation: While a simple explosion would suffice, it'd be way cooler if the helicopter spun out of control, smoked, and exploded.

5. Drag/Sway: When you move the helicopter, it should sway like an actual helicopter. Bushido has done this very effectively.

Finally; Vehicles getting stuck in stuff: You can basically put any vehicle inside a brick simply but crashing it into a brick. The Tank is most notable for its uncanny ability to grab bricks that are next to it like it was made of glue or something.

looks like good guidelines, and say jeep is best for going through cubes, not a tank

We can't fix this, it's Badspot's vehicle system.

Like somebody said at some time...

Vehicles just don't work with bricks. It's Torque.
I do believe.

Solution? Rewrite vehicles. Hard? Very.

I would like to see the helicopters gain speed in the angle (they are facing to - 90), instead of pressing space bar.
So like this easy paint job i created in a couple of seconds:

An angle of 90 would crash and burn. You have to factor gravity, there's a reason helicopters don't fly like that.

I personally like the Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction style of helicopter control. It did tilt as you moved forward, but you were not in direct control of the tilt. You just told it to go up, down, left, right, forward, or backward, and it did it the right way. On the other hand, when helicopters have some kind of realistic control scheme, like in GTA 3, I can't begin to fly the things. I am constantly wobbling the thing forwards and backwards in vain attempt to find the position where I'm not either shooting into the air or falling to the ground.

No, or somebody would have by now. This is the area for suggestions and requests for Blockland all together, not just the modding community. The engine can be changed, and that's what we're asking for. A change to provide a functional base for a helicopter design.

Same with Saints Row 2 or GTA IV heli control. I wouldn't mind this.

Gravity: not just a good idea IT'S THE LAW!

It was just an example..
I know an angle of 90 would be bad, but it's just an example.

The main thing is, when you press W you go up when you are not tilted, when you are tilted, you go up in the tilted direction...
S to go down.
A and D to rotate your heli.
Mouse to tilt your heli.

I'm thinking I'll just do some sort of helicopter vehicle class. I've started before but it's just the controls that get confusing. So you propose it'd be jump and crouch that raise/lower the helicopter with movement keys doing pitch and roll?

:D

My suggestion is to handle the angling of the helicopter automatically based on variables in the datablock, and have the movement keys tell it to move in a certain direction while using those variables to rotate itself at a rate based on the acceleration to look realistic but still be really easy to control.
