I personally pour my upgrade points into sheild spec and polearms spec.
I don't have to get near them, and if they get near me, they won't do much.

I never found any polearms when I used spears :\

Laser guns are terrible. They might seem good when you look at stats, but their fairly low direct damage, tiny splash damage, and long reload make it a huge disappointment.

Good weapons for gunners are as follows.
Any blast pistol
Spread pistols
Combat shotguns
And the silver lance. Kick ass gun sword with an extremely long range.

I just got into Titanic on adven mode.  I hound a pistol, bow and arrow, chains, and keys.  It will most likely be used for the gates durring the sinking.  ICE BERG, RIGHT AHEAD !!!

Save the keys and ditch the pistol for a rocket launcher. The gates are vulnerable to rockets and you can save your keys for the next part of the level to get the UberSpear
