I'm sure its been discussed before, but couldn't the train be a bot? The walking anim could have the wheels spinning, and bots can definitely follow paths/turn/etc.

actually i agree with you because it will require lots of scripting. i think the train should just go one way. or what about this. there is an invisible brick that makes the train turn.
