Pant-stufftingly scary, I must say. They would be like any other point and click adventure games but the story is really good and the developers do a great job of crafting a horror game with the lighting and sound effects.

One of my girlfriend's dumped me for stuffting my pants and screaming like a little girl when I played this.

I have never EVER gotten that far on this game.
I finish the part where you come out from the little cave thing and hear that monster thing. After that I uninstalled and got a new pair of pants.

All I've gotten into in Penumbra: Overture (the first one) is your guy finds out that his father that abandoned him when he was born died 30 years ago and left him some stuff that pointed him to northern Greenland. Long story short, you go there, nearly die of hypothermia until you find a mysterious hatch in the middle of nowhere, Greenland. You go inside to find an abandoned mine/WW2 base and get trapped inside. It's now inhabited by pant-stufftingly scary stuff, though.

The cool thing about the game though is that besides the opening monologue and things your character says when you're walking around in the mine (text that comes up on the side of the screen, stuff like "I can feel my heart beating in my chest, I've never been so scared...") you discover the story completely through his eyes and through the stuff that you look for and find. It's the kind of thing where it turns from something very small into a very intricate, very scary storyline that unfolds before/through your eyes.

"Gameplay

Although Frictional Games describes Penumbra: Overture as a first-person adventure[4], the game blends the genres of survival horror, first-person shooter, and adventure. The use of Newton Game Dynamics emphasizes physics-based puzzles as well as physics-based combat. The game also takes advantage of advanced artificial intelligence to respond realistically to noises and light, creating stealth-based gameplay.

There are no firearms in the game, so during combat the player is limited to improvised melee fighting with a pickaxe, or throwing objects at attacking creatures. The game is designed to emphasize stealth and avoidance over direct conflict. (For example, Philip can close doors behind him to temporarily hold off attacking enemies.)

The game's main focus is on exploration and classic adventure game object interaction: examining and collecting objects and using them to solve puzzles."

Not really.

Edit: Oh, the article does definitely.

Sounds awesome, but also something that I'd not be able to play too long cause it's too freaky. :(
