The easiest way to do it is to have a client-side light that only the one thats using it can see.

You're right, it does sound very possible. Client sided and only visible to that client would be cool. The problem being that if you're suggesting it be a light (like your standard ones) it'd have to be so big, causing the client lag. However, if you're intending to change the HUD a different color, making it seem like night vision, THAT sounds a lot more difficult to me. Sorry to say.
Also, on my own part, I would like to say if this project were to come to be...

I mean like a green playerlight, that only you can see and have a bigger radius than the normal playerlight.
It's the easiest way to do it, i think.

EDIT: I would not like it so much if it where completely client-sided, because then you could cheat on dark dm's, zombie survivals and such.
I would like it as an item, because then it can be placed to be used when you want it, and removed when you doesn't want it ect.
