Family Guy is unfunny and overrated. The writers are loving terrible, and can't think up a decent transition, so they just have a character say "Like that time we..." or "Remember that time when..." before going to some completely and totally irrelevant stuff. Almost all of the show's humor is based on bad puns, fart jokes, or as I stated before, completely irrelevant garbage. If you ask me, that show should have stayed cancelled.

Sounds like you got that off South Park.  The point of the show is to be random.  Those flashbacks are what makes Family Guy what it is.  They often aren't used to transition anything and there is typically a joke relevant to a current event or rumor.  Bad puns and fart jokes are hardly the essence of its humor and "irrelevant garbage" is a term you can only use when you don't get how the random joke fits in with the show.
