It's good. I do agree that it does look like it was an altered photo, filtered, then smudged. But, if it wasn't, then that can just be taken as a compliment. Either way, however it was made, it does look good, so kudos.
The only reason I'm guessing people would suspect it was as such, is because of the rainbow color effect that has occurred along some of the outlined areas, and areas like the very edge of the eyes and ears as well as part of the shirt. This usually only occurs when you alter a photo, and not via normal means of painting.
Had I seen the actual reference photo, I would know right away if it was an alteration or not. But for now, I personally will not judge against you, so please don't interpret this as such.
Don't hate me for saying this, I'm just stating why others may have seen this and have said such before I have mentioned it.
Once again, no matter how it was made, it does look like a good job.
