Holy forget I've loved Tom Waits for at least a year now. His singing is an acquired taste, in my opinion.

the equation is not confusing at all
The way it's written, yes it is.

Is where the confusion comes in.

you clearly havent been to algebra yet

2(9+3) is
2*(9+3)

OR
2x(9+3) if you're too handicapped to figure out *
I've been through Algebra. If the equation were written in a way less confusing, I'd have been able to get the correct answer.

When dealing with multiplication and division, you go from left to right.
The last math teacher I had refused to teach us American math, but rather the math he grew up learning in Europe.

I'm only approaching the equation the way I was taught.

Illidan, I can see how you got that, but its called divide, not simplify. :o
Then in that case, being / means to divide, it would be 48 divided by 2(9+3) which would still equal 2.

48/2(9+3)
48/2(12)
48/2x12
48/24
=
2

Parentheses - In this case, 9+3 being in the parentheses means you add these together first.
Exponents - Skip this, as there are no exponents involved.
Multiplication - After adding 9+3, you'll see that the denominator has become 2(12). Multiply these together, and your result is 24.
Division - Now the fraction has become 48/24, which is simply 2.
Addition
Subtraction

Although, seeing this problem typed in this way can cause confusion.

48/2(9+3) can mean 48 divided by the product of 2 times the sum of 9 + 3.
or
48/2(9+3) can mean the quotient of 48 and 2 times the sum of 9 + 3.

I just happen to see it as the first possibility.

What a reasonable conclusion. The guy is a grammar nightmare, period.
And? People have the slightest difficulty understanding what he says.

You're only being an starfish.

Oh god damn, none of your posts even make sense.
Either you're going to get some decent grammar or people continue to ignore your posts.
It's not hard to understand him. You're just handicapped.
