I feel like it got super played out already (much like zombies). It really became a fad.
I'd much rather have natural disaster games with some sort of super-natural twists.
For example, a game where you're trying to survive in a flooded town/city. You'd use boats and rafts and stuff to go between houses and such, creating a network of bridges and stuff. You are completely alone for a long time into the game, just trying to survive (much like minecraft minus the mobs). Eventually, you encounter some sort of adversary, whether it is just one other person who is fighting you for resources, a gang of raiders, or some supernatural force (fish people or something). You'd have to use all the stuff you'd constructed to survive. Also, the game wouldn't be super weapon heavy. It'd rely heavily on traps and stuff as well as bluffing and talking.
