Would a deeper backstory woven into it like the man losing a significant other, family or something in a tragic accident help to explain his tendency to be a recluse? I mean he could be a total introvert, but just that alone doesn't add depth nor have a chance at appealing to all audiences.
Edit: Read deeper into the story and saw "resolve differences". This might fit in with what I just mentioned.
