Author Topic: Sure seems like Apple doesn't like ports.  (Read 5436 times)

And we have a superior alternative to USB Type-A (The most widely used one) called USB Type-C. This is what Apple put in their previous MacBook Air. Putting four of those in their MacBook would have brought progress towards standardizing the superior, open-standard port. But instead they chose to limit themselves to thunderbolt, a proprietary standard. Which means higher costs for manufacturers to both license and produce, which means in the end consumers have to pay more, for equal or less.
I guess you can say Apple doesn't consider USB very important.
Not like USB is universal or anything amirite?
thunderbolt is USB-C+
USB-C devices will work with thunderbolt
you may have to get an adapter for it to work with regular USB connectors, but they are not just abandoning USB

still stupid that it's proprietary though

You don't buy a brand new car and get sent a car with the wheels and radio missing, with a pamphlet giving you extra steps in which you can buy the wheels and the radio.
I know I'm late but what is this argument lmao
Have you ever owned a car?
You're legally required to buy insurance before you can even drive it
and your car will stuff itself if you don't do routine maintenance like oil changes

Either way you're comparing two completely different products
You don't have to buy anything extra, because it already includes an antivirus. And if you don't want that, there are countless free ones out their.
And you don't have to know which websites are good or not because your browser can just warn you "hey bro this website looks shady" and your antivirus throws out stuff that you download.

thunderbolt is USB-C+
Is thunderbolt compatible with USB-C, or did they literally just take USB-C and slap their own name on it?
USB-C itself isn't proprietary, I have a friend with a windows phone who has a USB-C port

the only apple device i've ever owned i turned into a skateboard. that's all it was good for after i got a nexus

They are compatible

My post got ignored, so I'll condense it because it still contains information that it seems most of you are grappling with.

The port supports the latest generation of USB devices. Yeah, USB-A won't fit, but it will get better over time with expanded USB-C support. Also, we're talking about a laptop here: who plugs periphery devices into laptops nowadays? It's 2016 and printers, mice, keyboards, external hard drives, and any other common periphery device can all be operated wirelessly.

the problem is that USB-A is still the most common. flash drives, external optical drives, mice, etc. still overwhelmingly must use or come with USB-A connections. forcing people to purchase adapters or new wires is not consumer-friendly in the slightest, and it's especially stuffty if they know a large number of people will buy those products from them. there's nothing inherently wrong with embracing thunderbolt, but there is a problem with not offering any type-a ports on the system at all given the current market.

USB-C has the potential for widespread use in the future, but we aren't there yet.

Also, Apple is overpriced for a good reason, my brother uses an apple dextop computer and has 32 gb of RAM and two processors, it costs a forget ton more to build/buy a computer with the same specs
Lol, this is bullstuff. I'd bet money that I could build the same computer for less than 70% of the price. I'd be confident that I could do it for less than half.

The reason why people call Apple overpriced is not because they build computers with expensive hardware. It is because their computers are usually double the price of a computer with the exact same specifications.

seems like theyre just stripping away completely fine and nice to have features we have been taking for granted for years now, headphone jack in iphones, normal ports in laptops and now an escape button

apple sucks. all i ever use by them is the iPod nano.

Adding to this:

Apple is a for-profit business, not a charity. They need to make a profit.
They buy the same hardware as you, assemble it, and sell the finished product to consumers. If you think they're somehow selling their computers for less than the hardware costs, then tell me how they're making profit to keep the company alive.

Manufacturers have things like bulk discounts, and some will cut corners by using really cheap PSUs and stuff. But that's not going to account for a "forget ton" of price difference.

Also I don't see why anyone needs two CPUs, except for a server. And I've never heard of people running servers on Macs.

thunderbolt is actually extremely fast

What's this? The bigger your theoretical speeds, the bigger your snake? Seems to be an awfully catchy trend in the tech industry now days.

Guys. For real. It's Thunderbolt 3. But it completely works with USB-C, which will eventually replace USB-A. Should they have included a couple USB-A ports as well? Probably. But this is the future of USB, at least for now.
