The metalsmithing skill gives you stuff for smelting, cooking gives you ovens and cauldrons, masonry gives you brick walls, yeomanry gives you palisades, leathermaking gives you stuff to make leather from skins, and many other skills will unlock structures.

i can't wait to get leathermaking, and cooking, along with the hunting skills. I have to rely on apples all day. :c

also, a last question, how do i make stone tiles? I try to lay stone but it does nothing.

whats a good grid size for each one? is 5x5 good, or 2x10's?

Better 5x5's to keep things neat. if you want a 2x10's for strip farming, its best to put them in a corner.
With 5x5's, your house should be on the corner, or you wont see your crops :P.
