Well, if you have someone's hearth secret you can spawn at their village. If you don't, you pretty much start alone. Be wary of boars, they tend to kill. :D

Another thing, when you die, you stay dead. You don't just re-spawn or get a second chance. Once you're dead, you're gone. So yeah, you don't wanna get swimming. It kills. You could always make more characters though.

No they're not that rare, but they're lovely in how you can dry it on a drying frame or herbalist table and it will become a random seed.
