i think we ended up having 3 picks before I died, and a village sausage maker and like, 4 metal plows

i had 8 metal bars in the peak of red october and the nearest mine was half a supergrid away, and we also had a militia sword, and other fancy stuff

and that 8 metal bars was after we made a stone mansion, a cellar, and a metal plow.
