Author Topic: Computer purchase part 1: Case.  (Read 5835 times)

I have money for computer parts, and I was looking at cases and have decided upon this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811156062

Opinions? I know this is a behemoth (30-40 pounds) and ugly as all hell but its cheap and its got plenty of room and its solidly built, plus I've heard that its a good case for a first build. Do you think I could go ahead and safely plop down $70 on this?

Edit: It also includes a 500w power supply. Could I use that one with my build or do you think I should get a better one?

Edit 2: If you can find a cheaper or as expensive one that still has good airflow, plenty of room and easy accessibility I'll go with that one probably.

gah i don't want to drop 100 on a case. What does that case have that the one I posted doesn't that's worth dropping $30 more?

The Antec 300 has better cooling (which you probably won't need :p) but the Smilodon is probably one of the easiest mid-towers to work with.

It doesn't look like the 300 has cable management.

How's the cooling on the one I posted?

Also why would I not need good cooling? I'm hopefully going to have a decent GPU (I was looking at the GTS 250) and a good processor (AMD Phenom II X4 with a quad core 3.4 GHz processor) I figure that would all run pretty hot.

Whats the budget for the whole computer?

Not really, and don't get the 965. It's just clocked slightly higher than the 955 which is something like $15 less.

And the GTS 250 is pretty much just a 9800. For the price, get a Radeon HD 5770. I heard that it's performance rivals that have a GTX 260 and the 270.

You shouldn't need 'super' cooling so the Smilodon would probably fit your needs better. They both have decent cooling the 300 just a bit better.

That doesn't look that ugly, I think it looks kinda cool.

$120 (Great combo) for Antec 300 Illusion (regular antec 300 + 2 extra fans), and 500 watt earth watt power supply.

Thats a great deal for the power supply and case. Both are high quality as well. I have the 650 watt earth watt power supply + regular antec 300 and both are great.

Also with that combo would that 500w power supply be enough to power everything in my computer? If so, should I go ahead and buy that?

It's actually slightly lower then the 4870 and gtx 260.

But it will have direct x 11.

Preferably. There are cheaper ones too. The MSI one assumes that the user is going to overclock it. Which you probably won't do anyways.

And that $120 combo is stuff. That power supply is stuff and that case has next to no features.

If you want to get a PSU, get a good one.

Same goes for you Sirrus, you might want to go with a name-brand power supply.

Yes. That chart also doesn't seem very accurate...

Did you check the reviews... What kind of features do you want in a power supply anyway. Outside Corsair, Antec is practically one of the best psu makers.
