Ninjas are highly trained swift moving assassins, used to ambush during times of war, or on criminals. They were real people and did not make those handicapped noises they are always using in kids shows.
Pirates were almost always privateers who did not stop bombarding the coastal cities after being dismissed of their services to the country. Most "pirates" we know today were simply privateers, like Captain Kidd. Pirates were very well trained sailors, capable of taking on coastal cities with only a couple ships. The "jolly roger" (skull and crossbones) was actually a signal that that ship had the plague and to avoid it at all costs, allowing the privateer or pirates easy access to the coastal cities. Pirates, no longer being under order of the government would be locked up in prison if found, as they were now at peace with the towns they were destroying.
Pirates, unlike privateers, did not have to worry about their actions, so they spent alot of time drinking, plundering, raping, kidnaping, pillaging and fighting. Pirates did not sing all that often, contrary to kids shows, but may have sung songs while sailing drunk.
