Author Topic: So, uh, who here plays roguelikes?  (Read 1197 times)

(DISCLAIMER: Nethack has NOTHING to do with hacking, or the net.)

For those of you who do not know, roguelikes are a type of game like a dungeon crawl, but with one subtle change.
You will die. A lot.

Like, hundreds of times. Now, one might say, "That sounds like a total suck."
Well, that is not true. You see, once you finally beat the game, you feel like you really earned it.

Roguelike games have been around for a long time. Heck, Nethack came out in the 80's.

There are two major ones now, Nethack, that is very, very hard.
And, Dungeon crawl stone soup, which is slightly more user-friendly.

I think that you should download them, they're only a couple MB, free, and you will like them. No, I'm sure.

(I would post the links, but that might count as advertising a fourm, so just google the names or something.)

Instead of playing ASCII roguelikes, I played the Mysterious Dungeon series (No, not that Pokemon stuff), such as Shiren the Wanderer and some Japanese releases of the series.

I used to be top player of Shiren until four months after it came out when I stopped playing (I got everything at max upgrade and completed all dungeons, etc.)

Pretty sure in rougelikes it's "Die and it's game over"
Right?

I think torchlight has a mode like that.

Bah, torchlight. The true spirit of roguelikes is being free.
Plus, torchlight is not really a roguelike.

I always thought the Roguelike genre was text based RPGs like Dungeons and Dragons me and my friends play in the basement.
You heard nothing.

I loved Mystery Dungeon :c

The servers won't work for me. :c

I think Dwarf Fortress was tagged as a roguelike game also.
