MechAssault is the Console version.
It's the same universe.
Not quite, certain liberties were taken to make the Battletech universe more "Arcade like" to fit the controller and console. Even the storyline with the Word of Blake was watered down.
Back in the day people would spend hours using spreadsheets on the table top game, which later was translated pretty well in the older MechWarrior games. Tonnage/heat ratios were the way to keep your tiny metal men/machines alive. I absolutely used to dominate this game.
I've had this game forever, loved it. But alas I'm more interested in the Crysis mod that's finally taken the principles of the older games into effect. One of the earlier problems was everyone I ever played against always wanted to use Assault mechs, where as I'd go with large groups of medium/heavies to punch holes into the opposition.
Maybe I'll reinstall it, seeing how Microsoft probably fixed it with patches. Makes me want to paint my forces in Skye Rangers colors, because they own. (Also anyone that likes robots shooting crap to death should download MechCommander 2, also released to the public by Microsoft)
