Getting TF2, but I want more information about it

I need help deciding which I should get.
Now, the only reason I am even considering COD4 is because I want an FPS on my PS3 and I don't think my one and only game, LBP, is not going to entertain me forever. Also, COD4's multiplayer is better than MW2's (Much more balanced weapons, less campers, Ect.). I would just play it on my Xbox 360, where I already have it, but it keeps overheating because the power box thing is a faulty, from what I've concluded. (It buzzes all the time, gets way hotter right away, so on and so forth)
But, please, don't bring the COD bandwagon here, even though I'm pretty sure it's MW2 that got that bandwagon rolling.

So, what do you think? Any other suggestions?

I'm getting TF2, yey. Tell me moar about this hat thing and some other stuff that I probably don't know of yet (Really, all I know about is that this is a FPS, and there are classes.)

TF2 is just a punch of grenade and rocket spam like its predecessor TFC, but its alright if your into that stuff.

My friends don't have a first clue about TF2, and they are fanboys of MW2 and refuse to play anything else in the series.
I need to start getting different friends.

EDIT: So, I looked to find some more data for TF2, I heard about some hat and crafting thing, is this more than just a FPS..?! Please tell me more about this hat thing.

There's unlockable weapons and a random drop system for items and hats (which do not affect gameplay). There's a degree of customization that's currently being expanded upon.
