Author Topic: HL2- Overrated?  (Read 1192 times)

First of all, let me be very clear- I loved HL2 and I think it's a wonderful, outstanding game.

That being said, I don't understand the accolades that it has gotten, such as "best game ever". There are a few fields that I think HL2 does beautifully in, and those are the following:

  • Voice acting, storytelling and character animation.
  • Graphics for the time.
  • Technical advancements with Source engine and level optimization.
  • Character animation.
  • Great level design and crafting of a specific atmosphere and feel.
  • Realistic physics engine for 2004.

However, I found the gameplay to be incredibly linear, and replay value to be rather low. It also was perhaps a bit on the short side. Deus Ex, even with its stuffty graphics, (at times) laughable voice acting, and a pretty goofy physics engine had phenomenal gameplay where you could play it through eight times and find new things each time. The story was also very well written.

Hell, I even liked GTA:SA more than HL2.

In short, HL2 was graphically and technologically a great game, but it felt like playing through a book. It was a damn good book, but I never felt attached to the decision making process in the game. It didn't suck me in by allowing me to make decisions (or at least seem like I was making decisions) about how I accomplished an objective.

Anybody else get the same feeling?

I agree. It gets way too much praise.

Goofy physics are fun.

Plus i've played through it about 40+ times, Most of those times multiplaying with synergy

it has hardly any replay value except for synergy.
sandbox games are becoming more and more prevalent in the gaming industry.

Reading this makes me want to play through Half Life 2 in Gmod for some reason.

Ha, I love using the CS:S Realistic Weapons pack in HL2.

You said Character animations twice and I do agree.

I love playing through it again in Gmod and just using unfair weapons to my advatage. Also spawning a army to help you.

6 years ago, comparing to the games 6 years ago HL2 was like wtf awesome insane Crysis eating machines. Half Life 2 had lots of things that I've never experienced in games before it came around, you're looking at it from a 2010 point of view which is very ignorant.

I love playing it in Gmod because I can spawn vehicles and a bunch of crap to make it more fun.

Deus Ex came out four years before HL2 and GTA SA came out on PS2 a month before HL2. Just sayin.

Honestly though, it might be unfair to compare the gameplay to sandbox adventure games that are so prevalent now, but it's not like some of the gameplay flaws that I pointed out exist only because the alternative had never been done.

none of those had puzzles which made you actually think

GTA SA had no physics, wasn't even a FPS so you're comparing 2 genre's. Never played Desu Ex but I hear its really good.
