you could never really kill the swarm, you got experience for the damage dealt to them but you got killed before you could really do anything
and the reason botting went up is because they removed these things. making it easier for bots ≠ easier for new players

i broke my mithril pickaxe (when mithril was like one of the most expensive things for me, yes that long ago) and it lagged for like 5 minutes and a person ends up picking it up even though he has no use for it.
