Pre-Thread Notice:
This thread discusses the very itty bitty insides of computers. Feel free to use this thread for advice as well and feel free to ask about additional information, but please, if you don't know what you're talking about, don't talk at all because chances are you'll just cause a clusterforget for yourself.

You may see some shortened looking terms like CPU, HDD and PSU. Hover your mouse over them in the list to see what they mean/do (but don't PMS a blood-flowing Niagra Falls if I'm not defining it right)

Note: The below text is unnecessary junk now. Please disregard this, it sucks roosters.

So in light of graduating school I was given the option to either put a list together for a $1000 custom-built desktop or a $1000 laptop for gaming/school. We looked for good gaming laptops and I've been told from friends and people IRL who own gaming laptops that it's not exactly a good investment for the long run (4-6 years).

In the end I chose to keep my Dell Latitude D610 for school and incredibly light 2D gaming and decided on upgrading my desktop.

Now there were four things I was positively sure about upgrading.
-Motherboard, because LGA775 is becoming outdated since the Core 2 family.
-CPU, because its an LGA775 Core 2 Duo.
-RAM, because they are different speeds and DDR2.
-Hard Drive, because I'm frequently running out of space and having to uninstall games to install more.

Unnecessary stuff stops here, below is the list I've chosen out and will order next week.

I put together a list of VERY, very high end parts in my opinion. Please feel free to point out any flaws in the list and correct me if you feel it is of utmost importance.

Well add a little parmesan, cook it in the oven a little, throw some spice in there, I guess then if you were a robot.

Ok.

ditch that piece of stuff, real men use Difference Engines.

If you're willing to shell out an extra $2900 $3700, I have some suggestions to make that PC quite a bit better.

No I'm not buying three GTX485s, a Core i7-980XE and an additional 18GB of RAM.

Can I get more serious responses especially basing towards my two questions at the end of the OP?

Everything seems to be in order, and I'm going to assume you have a case picked out.

Why would you get a 930 when the phenom II x6's are the same price?

Forgot to mention I'm using my mid-tower ATX case. Because I just LOVE Optimus Prime.

1. I prefer Intel.
2. I don't want to get a hex-core. I want a quad core with hyper threading to add 4 logical cores to 4 physical cores. If you have sources telling me it's got better performance feel free to link me, but until then I'm sticking with Intel just cause I love them <3

I'm going to sleep now, see you all in the AM.

Alright whatever. You do know that hyper-threading benefits very little, right?

If performance as in games you see will none. Nor will you if you compare the i5 750 to the 980x.

It's not like you're going to see a performance increase with 6 cores.  The most number of cores a game will use these days is 3.  So unless you multi-task like a motherforgeter, it's just about as useful as the i7.

Actually I meant four GTX 480s, an EVGA Classified SR-2, and two Intel Xeon x5680s.

When I read "Graduating school" and "desktop" at first I cringed, then I realized that you aren't at that point quite yet.
