I mean, so is people, but... you're not as likely to sympathize with some random person you don't know as to some cute cat.

I saw this video before people started calling it "three guys, one hammer."

As gruesome as it is, it really isn't as terrible as you say it is. Going on websites like Documenting Reality way too much just exposes you to stuff like this way too much, and at some point, it loses it's shock factor. I've watched videos of kids cutting off people's heads, people shooting themselves, people getting run over by trucks and trains, people being burned, etc.

But really, you're overreacting to what's meant to be a shocking video. The kids were arrested and if I recall, were sentenced to life in prison.
