you know, games where the focus isn't so much stabbing everything in sight and going on mindless errands for people as much as they are personally screwing with the world, trying not to die and maybe exploring stuff along the way

that aren't wurm

This makes me think
Minecraft would be pretty cool with quest NPCs
ie "Go into this cave and get x amount of iron ore for me, and I'll give you a bow and x arrows"

Dead Frontier. Hard as hell, zombie survival MMORPG, browser based, birds-eye view (3D coming soon). Start out customizing your character, choose a class out of many ( example: Doctor can aid for money, Boxer has +5 melee) Then go out and kill zombies, do missions like going far to cities and finding a diamond necklace. Badass game man.
