I'm sure he did try to fight, then realized it was pointless considering how weak he was with that weapon and the strength of the enemies.

I once remember doing something stupid and figuring I could kill Umbra with an iron shortsword and peasant clothing. I tried. She chased me halfway across the province. I almost died. Then a Legion horseman came and distracted her long enough for me to get far enough away to fast travel to the nearest major city. :D

I have no arrows to effectively dungeon crawl.
I'm just going to keep throwing out reasons I can't do things.

He can't crawl dungeons without needing arrows.
He can't get arrows without buying them or dungeon crawling.
He can't find any good arrows at stores.
Without good arrows he can't dungeon crawl/kill anything.
