Over the timeline of my fort "Anvilgash", I had recently opened up the fortress for stuffs and giggles because I was bored and the bandits ran off with:

Three stones
A log
Some wool
A table

Oh no! My fortress is completely stripped! Curse you bandits! I was going to DO something with that table!!

Here's a great link for anyone who has been trying to get in to dwarf fortress. The pack includes all the graphics sets, utilities, and easy access to all the important options.

There's also a two and a half hour tutorial (only in df, amirite?) that's great and covers alot of important newbie info. I'm sure there's a shorter one out there, but I found this one to be great.

Just a forewarning:

If you take chickens (and a rooster) when you embark, don't nest them in a closed off area. What happens usually (in the open) is that the chickens lay the eggs, and your dwarfs will take them to a food stockpile. If the area is closed off, the eggs will be fertilized by a rooster, making more chickens. This cycle keeps going, faster and faster, and suddenly you find yourself with over 150 chickens, with 1 frame per second.

On the df forums they call it a chickensplosion.

Atleast the chickens won't pick their own ~~pet dwarves~~ owners and make themselves immune to butchery.

give them a mining designation that they can reach and make sure they have mining enabled and have picks

Anyways, what's going on in people's fortresses?
In mine, I just finished drafting and equipping a new militia force. Things are going pretty smooth, although I fear the humans will siege soon.

How do I get food for them? My dwarves are 'Cancelling' Or something, I dont know what it means.

what are they cancelling and why are they cancelling it? give everyone plant gathering and put a plant gathering designation over a grassy area

How do I farm D:
I try making farm plots but it dosent work :C
Made farms plots but now im confused with the seed menu thing.
What do I press? There isnt any 'Plant Seed' key.

Oh god, now everyones hungry, dehydrated and unhappy...
