Items are allowed, unless you go the extra mile and restrict those. Not advised for a first run, though.

I did this a while ago on my LeafGreen. Lost my team to Misty because I'm too impatient with leveling. :/ If you plan to finish it, make sure you have a lot of time on your hands.

it basically means if you catch a zubat and then see another one elsewhere just go like "forget that" and kill it

If you catch a Zubat, if the first Pokemon you see in another area is a Zubat it doesn't have to be the one you can catch. So you can catch the next Pokemon you meet (granted it's not a Zubat).
