This is what forgeted over my old computer.

Will avast! work? This is a pretty new computer, and I don't want some fake anti-virus program on it.

This program usually slips by because of advertisement/java scripts/Browser exploits or merely even pressing a top ranked google page that correlates with your search inquiry.

Easy prevention right there (for Firefox).
Also, those are links.

Why you weren't using those in the first place (and apparently a lot of people you know) really baffles me.

This happened to me this morning. It said I had some trojan virus so I did the normal restore and then I found out it was a scam when it wouldn't let me use the internet.

I used control panel and restored my computer to yesterday and it was all over. End.

There have been fake anti-virus programs for so long they now make up a large portion of the viruses that you can get. Also, disable javascript on websites you don't yet trust and have an ad+script blocker on.
The last few viruses I've had have been fake anti-virus, I have AVG and noscript/adblockpro, not particularly scared of this one.
