I think the only acceptable punishment today by most parents is taking your 10 year old's smartphone away, because spanking will apparently make them dumb and not go to Harvard or something like that.
You shouldn't hit children at all. Children aren't math problems, they won't come out the same way every time you do something. Certainly they learn through trial and error, but hitting them doesn't gurantee they will think that in the same light. They have an outlet of blame when a parent hits them, let alone the fact they may pick up that violent tendency.
10 year olds shouldn't have cell phones in the first place. :c
