Download paint.net and increase the brush size. makes stuff look much better.
(Don't forget to fill in the white spots in your drawings. I sometimes miss that, too.)

Make them a bit fluffier. You shouldn't make a photografic picture, you could use a camera for that, but make it have a good deal of realism in it.

Unless it's fantasy, in which case, forget realism.
