Theft only costs 50k lp to get, along with tresspassing. Make it at least a minimap away from the river or you will be stolen from. A lot.

As soon as I throw up a claim I never get stolen from, and once I get something someone will want to steal, (Metal, etc.) I will have palisades

claims don't stop things from being stolen or destroyed. they only allow you to track who did it.
you need a wall to TRULY protect yourself.

even with brick walls, i still wouldnt want my village anywhere visible from water
i havnt seen a single wandering player near my place ever lol. yet  when i boat around, everyone living on the river has scents of vandalism and theft.

no gear is good simply for being made. high quality is "good"

i hope you dont drool over a guy with a battleaxe and silk right? i mean anyone with a worm and some iron can toss those together. common items

also if you think battleaxes are 'common' you're an idiot too. the mats may be easy to make if you have patience to baby-sit 56 hours, but nobody usually makes them.
