I prefer to use MS IME, basically you type in romaji and then after you finish, you press the spacebar and it will try to guess the appropriate kanji you're trying to type, and if it's wrong you just press the spacebar again until it's correct. I can push the space bar and hit 0 and it will start writing in katakana.
