Author Topic: Something is using my bandwidth! HALP!  (Read 1181 times)

We have 10GB capped a month. I am allowed to use 5GB of that personally. I monitor my bandwidth usage so I can do what I want without going over the limit (if we go over the 10GB we get dial up speed). In Windows 7 I find that some process is using up to 10KB a second and it is quickly eating a lot of the Internet.

I tried uninstalling antivirus, quitting web browsers and all of the obvious things but something is still eating my net. I used a program to see what was using the ports, a few system services are open. I've disable autoupdates and such.

What should I do, I really need to stop random processes eating my net like this. It won't stop, its perpetual use!

EDIT: Forgot to mention some of this is uploading.. what could be doing that? :u

Have you done a virus scan

Install Palladium. That always helps. ;)

In ten thousand seconds, it will have used up one GB.
yeah, have fun with that.

My computer is 2 days old and I've done virtually nothing on the Internet. My virus scanner has been running a lot, its already scanned the computer and I've scanned any downloaded files.

Why don't you just unhook your internets until you source the problem?

FFFFFU-

For the last couple of days I've been disabling the wireless adapter. It doesn't stop services using extra internet when they shouldn't.

Probably the autoupdater. Since Vista, turning off autoupdater does nothing. Windows feeds on updates, and doesn't care whether it has your permission or not, it will steal the keys to your internet, sneak out the garage and smash that pusillanimous individual for some updates. まほ~

Sometimes it drops to 0.4kb though... doesn't seem like downloading speed to me.

Open the command prompt and use netstat -b

Okay so the only strange thing running was the Windows Media Network Sharing service. I stopped it and disabled it from automatically running. Hope that fixes it. :u

EDIT: I reinstalled avast, it seems that is constantly using the Internet too. Its the only process that shows up when doing what Wedge says.

i did that otu of curiosity
a small black console appears for a half second and does nothing

Avast always uses the internet to keep searching avast.com for virus database updates. Thats why you see Virus database has been updated.
