Dwarf Fortress hates me!

Well, I tried playing some dwarf fortress. That game is complicated, with all of the different symbols and things. I looked up a tutorial, which didn't help much. The tutorial told me to dig a hole for a fortress, so I did exactly as the tutorial said, but the dwarves are doing nothing. Halp with starting please? I have no idea how to play and the dwarves are all dying.

Just keep trying. Its got a hell of a learning curve, but its really fun once you get the hang of it. Everything makes sense, just not in the way you except it. Hope you keep trying, have fun!

PS: Its easier then it looks, because the goal is to fail epically.

Damn hard. Searching for another spot for a fortress because the other one flooded. All of the dwarves made it out but the miner, who was locked in the mine when it flooded.

Edit: How do I empty an animal trap? I caught a toad c:
