2Gb, not 3Gb. Althrought the more the better. 2 is average for day-to-day use.

Stores the startup instructions for the computer. It's a program stored in a small chunk of memory on the motherboard. It storess the various settings used and loads the operating system into memory, and once a significant portion of the OS is loaded it hands over control over to the OS. That is why you see the "scary" black screen computer mumbo jumbo before you see the OS loading screen.
